Delaware WAP Application Information

Delaware Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is a federally funded program through U.S Department of Energy (DOE) that offers aid to low-income households so that they can reduce their energy consumption and make their homes more comfortable and healthy. The program gives priority to households with elderly, disabled, and children.

Delaware WAP provides benefits only once. The program helps most vulnerable households who have high-energy costs but low household income. A household receiving weatherization services saves approximately $350 annually due to increased energy efficiency of the building. According to DEO, every $1 invested on weatherization returns roughly $2.50 through reduction in fuel consumption and improvement of building.

Delaware WAP provides number of services for eligible households to help them reduce energy costs. The program will first perform an energy audit conducted by a professional auditor. Once the audit has determined type of weatherization services needed for making the home more energy efficient, WAP contractors will carry out the necessary improvement work. Improvements can include gas leaks, ventilation, ceiling insulation, and sealing of air. Remember, Delaware WAP doesn't provide furnace replacement services.

Weatherization services through Delaware WAP are available for homeowners as well as renters. However, renters will have to obtain permission from their landlords who will need to share cost of weatherization services with Delaware WAP. The program is unavailable for apartments but multi-family residents can apply for Delaware WAP, provided 50% families living in the building meet income guidelines set for the program.

If your household doesn't meet income guidelines for Delaware WAP but needs weatherization assistance, which it can't afford, you can look for benefits available through Division of Energy and Climate or Energize Delaware program.
