Veterans Disability Benefits in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is home to nearly 300,000 honorable veterans. In recognition of their valiant service, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers significant benefits to Oklahoma's veterans.

One key benefit is the Veterans Disability program, which provides monthly financial compensation to eligible veterans with disabilities linked to their service in the military.

VA Disability Ratings

In order to evaluate how severe a disability is, the VA uses a rating system. They look at each condition and assign it a score anywhere from 10% to 100%. The higher the score, the more severe the disability is considered to be, and this means the veteran receives a bigger monthly payment.

In most cases, veterans are required to undergo a Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination. This medical review is conducted by the VA to evaluate the disability and assign it a rating.

Eligibility Guidelines for VA Disability Benefits

To be considered eligible for VA benefits, Oklahoma veterans must meet several eligibility requirements.

Both of these must be true:

  • You have an existing condition, either physical or mental, that impacts your health, and
  • Your service history includes active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.

And, at least one of the following must be true:

  • You incurred an injury or sickness during your military service that can be connected to your current condition. This is known as an in-service disability claim.

    or
  • An existing injury or illness from before your military service worsened due to your service — called a pre-service disability claim, or
  • You have a disability that is associated with your active-duty service but it only manifested after your service ended. This is known as a post-service disability claim.

A successful VA disability claim depends on having medical proof that shows a direct link between your condition and your service duration. Keeping a comprehensive medical record during your military service can increase your chances of receiving benefits.

If Your Claim Is Denied

If your VA disability claim is turned down, you have the right to protest the decision. File an appeal by completing and submitting a Notice of Disagreement form within one year from the date of the denial notice.

Include all relevant medical records, documents, and any witness statements that show your disability is related to your military service. To win your appeal, you need to convince the administrative law judge that your disability is real and linked to your active military service.
